Forget-Me-Not
Forget-Me-Not was composed in 2023 for string orchestra.
Duration: c. 3 minutes.
Approx. Grade 2
This work was inspired by the small blue flower of the same name, which represents fond memories, remembrance and love. At times light and playful, and others sweet and warm, this work aims to reflect these themes of love.
The Forget-Me-Not is a herb native to Europe, that grows small blue flowers which bloom from pink buds, though they can come in other colours. Blooming in the spring and summer time, these short plants have historically been used in medicine as an astringent to treat wounds and some conditions.
Representing love, remembrance and resilience, the forget-me-not's name and meaning supposedly come from a German folk tale. A knight and his lady were strolling along a river, and came across these flowers. Admiring them, the knight bent over to pick some for his beloved. However, he was still wearing his heavy armour, and the weight caused him to lose balance and fall into the river. Before being swept away, he threw the bunch to his lady and called 'forget me not!' Having lost her love, she wore the flowers in her hair for the rest of her life.
