The Red Glow

The Red Glow was composed in 2025, for low brass quintet (trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, two tubas). The work was commissioned by Nyeve Mackenzie.

Duration: c. 9 minutes, 15 seconds.

This piece is inspired by the life of notorious bush ranger and outlaw Ned Kelly. Kelly is an iconic figure in Australian culture, seen both as a folk hero who fought oppression, and as a representation of lawlessness and violence. The title of this piece comes from a quote from journalist Martin Flanagan - "What makes Ned a legend is not that everyone sees him the same - it's that everyone sees him. Like a bushfire on the horizon casting its red glow into the night."
