The idea of this work is based on the common idiom 'it's about time', which is often used as an expression of annoyance that something should have happened sooner, or that something is taking too long. The piece captures this idea of impatiently waiting - using percussion to emulate a clock ticking, which represents waiting for time to pass, and using increasing dynamics and thickening harmony in the wind parts to represent impatience building. There is a final bell/alarm performed by percussion in bar 34, with the piece ending on a major chord to represent the wait finally being over.
It's About Time was composed for musicians at the beginner level, utilising notes, rhythms, terminology and notation which would be familiar to a performer in their first few months of learning. Though the piece is scored for a full band, the less common instruments are doubled parts - allowing performance by both big and small school bands.
