Approximate Grade: 4.
This work is based on the latin phrase 'memento mori', which is translated to 'remember that you will die,' or 'remember death.' This phrase can be interpreted in two ways - the first being a more sombre and macarbe interpretation. It can be seen as a reminder of the inevitability of death - the unavoidable fate that awaits us all, no matter who you are or what you do. The end will come.
Secondly, in a more optimistic and joyous interpretation, this phrase can be seen as a reminder to celebrate life while we have it. Time doesn't stop ticking and our time on Earth is limited, so don't take your life for granted - enjoy it while you can!
Combining eeriness and lightness, sombreness and levity, the piece aims to represent both sides of this phrase. This piece takes both the macarbe and optimistic interpretations of this phrase and joins them in a twisted waltz in the main theme. The work begins and ends with more free and expressive solo feature sections.
