Duration: c. 15 minutes
Approximate Grade: 5
This piece was inspired by the Voyager I and II space probes, launched by NASA in 1977 to take advantage of a favourable alignment of the planets. Their mission was to collect data from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and transmit it back to Earth. These two probes have proved invaluable throughout their journey - now operating beyond the heliosphere
and transmitting data from interstellar space. These probes are the most distant human-made objects, travelling further than anything ever has before - explorers in a distant world.
"Voyager did things no one predicted, found scenes no one expected, and promises to outlive its inventors... Like a great painting or an abiding institution, it has acquired an existence of its own, a destiny beyond the
grasp of its handlers." (Stephen J. Pyne, 2010)
The different sections of this piece reflect different stages of the probe's mission - I. Launch, II. The Planets, III. Pale Blue Dot, and IV. Far Reaches.
